The Captain Jack site is located near the headwaters of the Lefthand Creek watershed in a narrow valley about 1.5 miles south of Ward, often called California Gulch, and immediately east of the Peak-to-Peak highway (Hightway 72) near the old mining camps of Puzzler and Camp Francis. The area was mined for gold and silver beginning in 1861 and up until 1992.
